Intro to Design

For this project, my team and I were tasked with finding a design problem on campus and then going out and designing a replacement. My team and I discovered that the bathroom stalls on campus needed a through redesign. However, before we were able to jump in and engineer a solution, we had to decide on what the problems really were. We had to talk to other students on campus in person and through surveys to see how they felt about the issue.

The main point for this project was to gain a deeper understanding of the design process and realize that there is much more to engineering than finding a problem and then immediately developing a solution. I was tasked with looking at prior solutions and then comparing them to our design choices which you can see starting on page 3 of our report. This was a very important task because there were several criteria that we looked at to make sure that our new design was superior. After all, what is the point in designing a new product if it is not any better than the existing design? This allowed me to develop research skills that would be very helpful in my career, for example, I conducted several eco audits to show our stakeholders that our designs would have a smaller environmental impact than the current designs.
